An Easter Cleveland Tradition!

March 8, 2012

In 1957, Ron Manolio and his suburban Cleveland family saved a year’s worth of eggshells from their breakfast kitchen, painted them, and placed them on their lawn for Easter morning passersby to enjoy. The attention generated by that not-so-simple act would change the lives of a family, a community, and thousands of strangers.  Soon, the Manolios were transforming their front yard into a childlike dreamworld of color and fantasy with tens of thousands of eggshells. “Mom and Dad used to put a few eggs in the bushes to celebrate Easter. I guess I took it a little further”, he says without a hint of knowing understatement.

“Eggshelland” is the story of Ron and Betty Manolio, and their unique 57-year family tradition – a quirky, inspiring display of art and obsession. Celebrating Easter and Spring in their own unique way every year, the Manolios bring joy to generations of Midwesterners waking from a long, gray winter. But “Eggshelland” is more than a suburban lawn display. It's a beautiful, funny, strange and poignant story of purpose and meaning, dedication and creativity, the never-ending joy of childhood in Springtime, and the resounding contentment of a life well-lived.

The award-winning documentary "Eggshelland", which chronicles a year in the fascinating lives of Ron and Betty Manolio and their famously unique Cleveland family tradition, is now available on DVD.  Called "One of the best movies you've never seen!" by the Seattle Best of Fest Awards, "Incredibly charming!" by Meg Hamel, Director of the Wisconsin Film Festival, and "A meditation on the meaning of art, family, devotion, invention and love" by the Madison Isthmus News, "Eggshelland" provides a fascinating look at the people, history, inspiration and obsession behind Northeast Ohio's loveliest tradition.

The DVD includes the same multi-award-winning 99-minute feature-length documentary that played to sold-out Cedar-Lee Theatre audiences and film festivals across the country, plus over twenty minutes of never-before seen footage including deleted scenes, crowd interviews and the original trailer.
